What is training and development (TD) in HRM

TD describes the formal, ongoing efforts within the organizations to improve employee performance and self-actualization through various educational methods and programs. “Training is the systematic development of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required by an individual to perform adequately a given task or job”. (Source: A Handbook of Human Resource Management Practice, Kogan Page, 8th Ed.,2001)

The objectives of TD

There are four other objectives as follows:

Individual - Help employees in achieving their personal goals, which in turn enhances the individual contribution to an organization

Organizational - Assist the organization with its primary objective by bringing individual effectiveness.

Functional - Maintain the department’s contribution at a level suitable to the organization’s needs.

Societal - Ensure that an organization is ethically and socially responsible for the needs and challenges of society.

How to implement a TD process

Analysis: Identify the performance gap

This phase involves identifying and clarifying the instructional problem or from a training standpoint, identifying the performance gap and desired outcomes.

Design: Identify the learning objectives

This phase involves defining specific learning objectives and instructional strategies, structuring content and assessments.

Implementation: Deliver the performance solution

Implementation involves the development of the training framework, including course curriculum, learning outcomes, and the learning space.

Evaluation: Evaluate the results relative to the performance objectives.

Evaluations are conducted to confirm that the learning resources meet the specifications established and to determine the training effectiveness and identification of required improvements.

Conclusion

Training and development is one of the key functions of human resources. Updating the skills and knowledge of employees in accordance with the constantly changing environment has become the most common and continuous task in any organization. By implementing appropriate employee training and development plans, the organization can enhance or develop additional skills or abilities of employees to improve performance and productivity, thereby achieving employee and organizational goals.

Training and development programs can educate employees about new skills or provide updates on existing skills to enhance productivity. Training and development programs can have a huge impact on a company. Employee development is a process whereby the manager and employee work together to create a development plan. This plan identifies areas to develop or enhance. Now, more than ever, owing to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, learning and development (L&D) in business is taking top priority in the workplace. Interesting and thanks for sharing .

  6. Employers focus on improving and enhancing the soft and technical skills of its employees to enhance the productivity and the outcome of the organization. It has to be a continuous process as the employees need to be updated about the advancement in all aspects. L&D can be conducted internal (Online, Soft & Technical Skill development) as well as external (Physical and social activities) for the betterment of mental and physical health as well. Through external activities key attributions like team building, decision making etc can be developed for greater extent. Thank You.
